Access to energy is vital to economic, social and human development. In order to achieve this goal and the associated positive impacts, this energy needs to satisfy a number of criteria: it must be adequate in quantity, available when needed, of good quality, reliable, convenient, affordable, legal, healthy and safe.
Decentralised systems, led by solar photovoltaic mini-grid systems, are the least-cost solution for three quarters of the additional energy connections needed worldwide. More than 200,000 mini-grids will be required before 2030, this with the potential to meet the energy needs of 490 million people, most of them in Sub-Saharan Africa.
NXT Grid is a one-stop shop for solar mini-grids. We enable local businesses to become successful solar mini-grid developers, by providing them (i) energy equipment offered on a rental basis, reducing upfront project costs by up to 80%, (ii) a software platform which automates the mini-grids’ design, development and operations, and removes the need for in-house engineering expertise, and (iii) capacity building for the field operations’ activities.
NXT Grid’s mission is to bring “Clean, reliable electricity for rural Africa”, through a one-stop shop for solar mini-grids.
The scalability via our partnering business model is unique and enables a strong uptake and development by local entrepreneurs to take ownership of delivering the final mile to the end customers.
Our ultimate vision of the future is one of “Clean mini-grids everywhere, run by everyone”.
Impact
To date NXT Grids has deployed and is operating 6 mini-grid projects in Nigeria, providing clean, reliable electricity to just over 5,000 end customers. An additional 3 sites are currently under construction and, by the end of 2023, 15 mini-grid projects will be operational, serving 25,000 end customers. Within the next 10 years, we target to reach 2,500,000 people in rural areas and avoid annually more than 200,000 tonnes of CO2.
Aside from the UN Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) on Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG7) and Climate Action (SDG13), NXT Grid’s activities impact on many additional SDG’s such as SDG5 - Gender equality, SDG11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG1 - No Poverty, SDG4 - Quality Education, SDG8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
