Building off-grid solar capacity in the rural global south

The projects

Solar projects enable the issuance of quantifiable CO₂ emission reductions based on the solar home systems and solar off-grid installations deployed by programme partners in developing economies. Primary locations for off-grid projects are located in Latin America, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, where these programs assist in accelerating the energy transition to renewable energy. The co-benefits of this stream are significant; decline in deforestation activities,  better health, access to mobile and banking services, and educational opportunities.

Proving the model

The CarbonClear model has been proven in partnership with some of the largest distributors of solar home systems in Africa and the Americas, such as SunKing, ENGIE Energy Access, Zola Electric, and iluméxico. This model has become the leading carbon credit solution for the solar off-grid sector. CarbonClear was founded 4 years ago and has thus far focused on proving and deploying its data-driven carbon credit model through solar off-grid partnerships in the Global South.

How it works

Our partnering projects distribute solar systems in developing communities, simultaneously collecting data on energy consumption and payment plan. This data is imported from the solar home system distributors via third-party software and sent to our ledger. The data is then transformed into unique digital credits, which can be monetized by selling the credits to interested parties on the VCM. Once sold, the carbon credit buyers receive a verified certificate of purchase, and 70% of the proceeds are returned back to the communities from which the data came, allowing distributors to expand and assist more communities.

External verification

CarbonClear’s solar projects currently apply a slightly amended version of the CDM “Small Scale Methodology: Electrification of rural communities using renewable energy” (AMS-I.L version 3.0). Enabled by the CarbonClear technology infrastructure, the amendments allow for more granular time incrementation and continuous monitoring; however, the specific calculations and standardised baselines are absolutely similar to the original methodology. These amendments are in alignment with ISO 14 064-2:2019, as verified by Det Norske Veritas, DNV.
