Carbon market integrity depends on trust. Trust requires proof. Proof requires computation. CarbonClear builds the computation layer.
Carbon credits generated, verified, and issued directly from real-world energy data — automatically, transparently, and at scale.
From carbon programme to computation layer.
CarbonClear's first deployment was an integrated carbon solution — a digital MRV system that measured real energy data from field devices and converted it directly into verified carbon credits, operated as a Programme of Activities across Africa and Latin America. In 2023, in parallel with that programme, CarbonClear spun out that computation layer and began rebuilding it as open infrastructure available to any eligible programme. That digital computation layer is the Carbon Engine.
A fully digital carbon system — operating at scale since 2021.
A Programme of Activities (PoA) groups distributed projects under a single Programme Design Document and a common methodology. CarbonClear's PoA has an embedded digital MRV system: solar partners register to the programme, and CarbonClear manages the measurement, verification, and issuance pipeline from device data to credited carbon.

Proof of Retirement Ledger
Each certificate is independently verifiable. The Verify links open the CarbonClear Explorer — a public interface showing the underlying measurement data, timestamps and geolocations of every device that contributed to the certified CO₂ emission.
iluméxico is a Mexican off-grid solar company serving more than 100,000 people across 2,000 remote communities not connected to the national grid. The programme replaces kerosene lamps and diesel generators with metered solar home systems. Credits have been issued under CDM-AMS-I.L methodology since 2023.
Uber Mexico has retired credits from this programme since 2023. Each retirement is a public record on the CarbonClear Explorer, linking the specific CO₂ reduction to the solar devices and communities where it occurred.
Computation replaces auditors.
A computation and data integrity layer — open to any eligible data source (protocol defined), independent of any standard or registry.
The Carbon Engine is a computation layer that sits between raw energy data from field devices and verified carbon credits ready for issuance.
It ingests real data from any connected device, applies a fixed calculation protocol, and generates Programme Monitoring Reports. Issuing standards access PMRs through a dedicated engine interface — reviewing unit provenance, approving, and downloading directly, with no validation and verification body in the chain. On issuance, the standard returns a receipt mapping their serial block to the engine's individual unit serials, making every issued credit traceable from standard serial to device reading.
No manual auditors. No interpretation. No discretion. Deterministic computation that any independent party can verify.
Three deployment models. One engine.
The Carbon Engine runs as a single codebase across Commercial, Co-governed, and Sovereign instances. Governance, ownership, and mandate differ by deployment. The computation and audit trail do not.
Commercial instances are operated by CarbonClear. Co-governed instances run under shared institutional mandate. Sovereign deployments are self-hosted and country-controlled — open source and publicly auditable.
The standard that the infrastructure runs on.
The Digital Carbon Protocol defines how raw energy data from field devices becomes verifiable carbon credits. It is the calculation standard at the core of the Carbon Engine — deterministic, auditable, and open to adoption by any crediting programme.
CarbonClear authored and maintains the Protocol as a published technical standard. The Global Carbon Council is the first crediting programme to accept D-MRV issuance conformant with it.
Computation opens a new category of carbon market applications.
Marketplace
A commercial marketplace built directly on the Carbon Engine. Buyers compose portfolios across projects and geographies at the granularity of individual credits. Every credit carries a complete audit trail from field device measurement to serial number to buyer.
Verification-as-a-Service
API access to CarbonClear's commercial engine for external programme operators. Audit-grade Programme Monitoring Reports and issuance by high integrity carbon standards — no dedicated instance required.
Future Applications
Real-time bilateral demand matching. Tokenised carbon instruments. Wallet-to-wallet credit transactions. Applications the computation layer makes possible.
